The city is relatively easy to reach by plane, train, car or cruise ship, making it a convenient destination for visitors exploring South Florida.
Once you arrive, you will find several transportation options for exploring the beaches, downtown and surrounding attractions.
Flying to Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is the city’s main passenger airport.
Located just south of downtown, it offers domestic and international flight connections.
From the airport, you can reach your accommodation by taxi, rideshare service, shuttle or rental car.
Miami International Airport is another option, particularly if you are planning to combine Fort Lauderdale with a visit to Miami.
Travelling by Train
Fort Lauderdale has rail connections to several destinations in South Florida.
Brightline operates passenger train services connecting Fort Lauderdale with Miami, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach and Orlando.
Tri-Rail provides additional regional rail connections throughout South Florida.
Amtrak also serves Fort Lauderdale, making it possible to reach the city from destinations farther north.
Getting Around Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale offers several ways to explore without renting a car.
The Water Taxi is a particularly enjoyable option, connecting waterfront destinations along the city’s canals and waterways.
Broward County Transit operates local bus services, while the free LauderGO! community shuttle provides connections along selected routes.
Walking and cycling are pleasant ways to explore individual areas, particularly Fort Lauderdale Beach and Las Olas Boulevard.
Do You Need a Car?
If you are mainly staying near the beach or downtown, you may be able to explore much of Fort Lauderdale using public transportation, taxis and rideshare services.
However, a rental car can be useful if you want to visit several coastal communities, explore the Everglades or take day trips around South Florida.
Parking can be expensive in popular beachfront areas.
Plan Your Fort Lauderdale Visit
For a first visit, I recommend spending at least three or four days in Fort Lauderdale.
Begin with the beach and Las Olas Boulevard, then enjoy a boat trip along the canals.
If you have additional time, consider visiting Miami, exploring the Everglades or discovering some of the smaller coastal communities nearby.
